Phil Murphy is Green Thumb Lawns Inc.
As
a youth growing up in the Morningside area of Edina I
was a very resourceful young man with a pocket that was
always full of change.
In 1975, starting at about age twelve, I would buy old
lawn mowers at the Morningside Community Church rummage
sales, rebuild them and then set out with a "Phil's
Green Thumb Lawn Service" flyer that my Mother, an
avid water color artist and hobbyist orchid greenhouse
grower, had created for me.
All
through high school I had many lawn mowing accounts in
the Morningside and Country Club areas of Edina.
This always enabled me to build all of my go- carts and
financed many a ski trip to local ski areas.
Out of high school, I set out to conquer the world,
joined the Army, and as an Infantry Man, traveled to Europe
for my tour of duty.
I
saw this as a great opportunity to get a free plane ticket
to Europe so that I could Ski The Alps.
When
I got out of the military I worked for the Goodyear Tire
Company as a salesman. I also did a stint as a car
salesman for the Walser Co. I got to thinking,
'Boy I'm Sure Puttin In The Hours'.
I
was looking at a future that I was not prepared for.
I got to thinking about all the fun I had in high school
and just exactly how it was that I was able to finance
all of my projects.
In
1987 Green Thumb Lawns was re-born. Since then we
have expanded our lawn service to include irrigation,
lawn renovation, landscape services, fertilization and
weed control, snow services, and with my mom, The
Orchid Lady, we have gone into the retail floral
business complete with greenhouses full of tropical blooming
Orchid plants.
